THIS IS THE MPD ON ART

Armed with terribly open-ended questions (what, in fact, is art?), MMG tooled around visiting some MPD galleries to report on the art scene here. The general questions were to get the gallery owners to verbally riff about the art they love. We wanted their honest, unrehearsed opinions on what they appreciated about art in general and in the MPD as it is now, and everyone had something insightful to share.

We visited a nice cross section of neighborhood galleries, from the established who've witnessed the area's transformations to the hopeful new excited about the possibilities still, even as the area's spun more towards fashion and retail then its promise as a new art mecca. We heard from those who enjoy being a little off the beaten gallery path to those who were looking forward to being in the thick of a new New York art scene here. Even retailers like Diane von Furstenberg, Shelly Steffee, Theory and destination are mixing art in with their fashion.
